Mad Cow Disease Appears in California

Critter News

Potentially bad news for California Agriculture. The reemergence of mad cow disease, discovered in a California dairy cow, could have major implications for the state’s meat industry, even though officials have said that the human food supply is unaffected. In California, private and public ranching takes up about 38 million acres, according to the California Cattlemen’s Assn. There are about 620,000 beef cows on 11,800 California ranches.

Farm Animal Welfare Fight Heats Up in Ohio

Critter News

Issue 2 in Ohio would create 13-member state board to oversee the care of farm animals in the State. The Humane Society and other groups oppose it as a power grab by big agriculture to prevent another Proposition 2 (the initiative passed last year in California to improve standards for farm animal care.) Big Ag Upset Over California Antibiotics Ban

Critter News

I actually read one headline asking whether this was the beginning of the end of commercial farming in California. Californian farmers and ranchers would be prohibited from routinely dosing healthy farm animals with antibiotics under a bill getting its first level of approval on 21 April in the state Senate, reports Central Valley Business Times. Then we feed those same antibiotics daily to the animals they will consume.

California's Ag Industry Worried that State Committee will Focus on "Emotion"

Critter News

Basically, it sounds like the ag committee will be including food safety and animal welfare concerns in their discussions. There is definitely a new tide in California, post Proposition 2. In a move that elevated the anxiety level among grower-shippers, Darrell Steinberg, the new president pro-tem of the California state Senate, overhauled the body’s agriculture committee. Update on National Meat Association vs. Brown

Critter News

Brown, a case in which the meat industry is attempting to invalidate a California law designed to reduce animal suffering and protect public safety. At issue is Section 599f of the California Penal Code, which, among other things, prohibits slaughterhouses from purchasing, receiving, selling, dragging, or pushing non-ambulatory animals, also known as “downers,” and requires immediate euthanasia of such animals. Did anyone know this was going on?

Beef Farm's Trucks Burned by Activists

Critter News

I don't support the destruction of property or any physical threats against people who harm animals whether through medical testing or through conventional agriculture. And, this happened in Fresno County which is in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Animal rights activists are behind the burning of cattle trucks at Harris Farms in western Fresno County early Sunday, according to a statement released by a clearinghouse for activists.

Steps Towards Ending Factory Farming?

Critter News

Last week there was a slew of articles about the agreement in Ohio between the farm industry and animal welfare activists to expand cage sizes for calves (veal), hens and pigs. This concession was to avoid a November ballot vote a la California's Proposition 2. The surprise truce in Ohio follows stronger limits imposed by California voters in 2008; there, extreme caging methods will be banned altogether by 2015.

Update on Proposition 2 in CA

Critter News

Again, thanks to Farmed Animal Net for this update on California's proposition 2. California’s Proposition 2 is not solely about the California egg business but is also about the egg industry’s national survival, warned Gene Gregory at the annual legislative meeting of United Egg Producers (UEP). In July, the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA)’s board of directors voted 9-4 to endorse Prop 2.

In contrast, the donations raised by the No on Prop 2 campaign have come from a handful of corporate factory farming interests—most from out of state and many which are embroiled in a national price-fixing scandal.

Critter News

To offset yesterday's crappy news about California, here's good news from the EU! 1, 2012, egg-laying hens across many European countries will live with fewer discomforts: The European Commission has officially implemented its ban on battery cages, the notoriously cramped cages used by many egg farmers and criticized by animal rights proponents and veterinarians who call them cruel and harmful to the birds' welfare. europe battery hens farm animal welfare agriculture

Ag Industry Looks Ahead to More Animal Welfare Issues

Critter News

Another big issue gaining momentum is animal welfare. The recent passing of a proposition in California to strictly manage how laying chickens are kept serves notice, he says. You may hate to hear about this, but I do think that the animal-raising industries are going to have to reach some compromises with the Humane Society of the U.S. Tags: farm animal welfare us agribusiness

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: As Mark Bittman rightly notes, California’s new farm animal welfare law presages what is coming for all farm animal industries nationally (“ Hens, Unbound ,” column, Jan. The tiny cages and crates that confine about 90 percent of laying hens and more than 80 percent of gestating sows are both physically and mentally tormenting for the animals involved. Physically, the muscles and the bones of the animals atrophy from lack of use.

Here is a Los Angeles Times story about California's Proposition 2, which passed yesterday. On the one hand, it improves the lives of many farm animals. In the long run, measures such as this may make things worse for farm animals I'm ambivalent about the proposition. On the other hand, it entrenches the idea that they may be used as mere means to human ends.

The animal housing debate will continue among those most knowledgeable about it.

Animals raised for food suffer miserably. The meat and dairy industries want to keep their operations away from the public’s discriminating eyes, but as groups like PETA and the Humane Society have shown us in their graphic and disturbing undercover investigations, factory farms are mechanized madness and slaughterhouses are torture chambers to these unfortunate and feeling beings. Animal agriculture is inherently inhumane.
