Ed Le Tourneau grew up watching cowboys drive cattle. Throughout the rest of his life, the California native balanced bull riding and veterinary medicine, from veterinary school to his senior years. He rode his first bull at 15 and was hooked.

Potentially bad news for California Agriculture. The reemergence of mad cow disease, discovered in a California dairy cow, could have major implications for the state’s meat industry, even though officials have said that the human food supply is unaffected. There are about 620,000 beef cows on 11,800 California ranches.

I, however, am still a California boy, in spite of not living in that state for four decades now, and I still keep track of the weather there. There seems to be two kinds of California weather these years: those with half the normal rain and historic wildfires, and those with 50% more rain than normal, and historic flooding.

California is blessed with 51 NWRs and Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), second only to North Dakota with 77. There had to be at least 100 or more, and when I got closer, I was excited to find several Cattle Egrets ( Bubulcus ibis ), a species of which a decent photograph had always eluded me.

I only had a few days in California while visiting my brother at Berkeley, but we couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to visit one of the most famous birding sites in the country: Point Reyes National Seashore. That original installation (pictured above) was part of a series of 40 artificial burrows created at three separate locations, all made possible by a grant from Audubon California. This property is located in northern Butte County which is nearing the (dwindling) northern most historic range for this species in California.
