In 1938, they were reduced to only 18 birds in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and only 11 remaining in the non-migratory Louisiana flock. The Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock’s numbers hovered on the edge of collapse until the 1960s, never numbering more than 34 birds in total. By 1950, the Louisiana flock was gone.

The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. After a very long day of 7 hours of driving, 11 hours flying and then 9 hours more driving, we have arrived at our temporary home here in South Africa. This will act as our base for the next 20 days.

By the time you see this in the United States, I will have had a full week to explore this amazing area, and the wildlife that calls this home. Crocodiles, Cape Buffalo and Hippos are plentiful. The schedule is a bit daunting, as we are up before 5 AM to get to the gate for the 6AM opening.

Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. Her husband was David Sheldrick, the renowned naturalist and founding warden of Tsavo East National Park who died of a heart attack in 1977.

John James Audubon first heard the sparrow in July, 1944, on a buffalo hunt in North Dakota. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed relocating the 14 Whooping Cranes that live in Kissimmee Prairie, which includes the pair I saw, and relocating them to Louisiana. It has always been a difficult bird to find, even when abundant.

This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month. This bird has two of the qualities that birders most want in a bird: it is a total crippler, and is staggeringly rare.
