On Going Vegan

Animal Person

First I have to say that my husband and I were in our courtyard last night, with wine, vegan pizza with shiitakes, portobellos and chanterelles (still working through that five-pound bag of Daiya cheese), and Diana Krall playing. But today's post is about World Vegan Day, so onward. When I think about my journey to veganism and my husband's journey, I am reminded that there are as many ways to go vegan as there are people. Some go vegetarian first, then vegan.

The Best in Vegan Education

Animal Person

Other than being a vegan, the most important actions you can take to help animals who are used for food are: Give generously to organizations that help those sentient nonhumans directly, such as Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary , Maple Farm Sanctuary , Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary and Eastern Shore Sanctuary. Encourage others to go vegan by educating them about the issues, and particularly about why we should not accept alternatives to eating animals that include eating animals (i.e.,

Sowing the Seeds of Veganism

Animal Person

I could be reading into this, but it does appear that there's some discomfort on the part of non-vegans when they look through the calendar and I tell them the story. Films are seeds (and Eric of I'm Vegan took a bit of a spill and when he's healed a bit more he'll get back to finishing up), blogs are seeds, vlogs are seeds, my recycled inner-tire rubber handbag is a seed.

“You Want Farm Animals to Go Extinct!”

Creature Talk

Yes, that is why I’m vegan - because I’d like all the farm animals to DIE! First of all, people aren’t going to go vegan over night - at least not the entire population. Those that couldn’t - like “broiler&# chickens - would only find it difficult because of human intervention in their breeding. Lessons Learned, The Finale

Animal Person

Lesson #20 We still don't know what will make a critical mass of people go vegan. But other than multi-pronged, multi-media, persistence, I have no idea what will be necessary to make most people go vegan. Yes, I see on Twitter that someone read Eating Animals and went vegan that day. All we know for sure, just from speaking with other vegans, is that there are as many stories as there are individuals. After all this time it seems that.

And managing means killing them, breeding them, and otherwise fiddling with their populations. I know he's a conservationist, therefore I know he will advocate for "managing" the "resources" that are sentient nonhumans.

On The Respectful Emperor

Animal Person

It wasn't long before The Humane Emperor came on the scene, and is still around, telling folks that with a little mental acrobatics you can include forcible breeding, captivity, separation of family, killing of day-old chicks, and of course, untimely death in the definition of "humane." Activist Releases 1500 Mink in Oregon

Critter News

About 1,500 mink were released from their cages with at least 200 of these being breeding stock. This action is being claimed for the vegan straight edge community. fur farmers are a dying breed. According to Bite Back Magazine , an activist released 1500 mink from a farm in Astoria. In the early morning hours of October 17th, a lone activist infiltrated the fur farm at 92659 Simonsen Road in Astoria Oregon.

I then promptly completely caved in and bought Wellness ' new large breed, definitely nonvegan dry food (and I always soak kibble) that has 25% protein (Natural Balance Vegetarian has 18%, and all from non-animal sources) and I've started cutting some in just in case (I'll stop at 50%). And of course, I will use the meetings as an opportunity for vegan outreach.

An Affront to the Idea of Family

Animal Person

Their goal is to make a profit from the breeding and slaughter of animals. Just ask former cattle rancher Howard Lyman , who is now a vegan and animal rights activist. If someone owns me, forcibly breeds me, takes my kids and ends my life, it's a living hell for me. I'm not one of those people who thinks family is composed of only humans or humans who are biologically related. That's one of the reasons adopting wasn't a stretch for me at all mentally.

On the Keeping of Endangered Fishes

Animal Person

There are conservation efforts to save these species by individual aquarists, who are keeping and breeding them in hopes that they can someday be reintroduced into the lake. I adopted the cats before I became a vegan, and although I don't like the fact that they eat other animals, it is my responsibility to keep them healthy. (I I have always loved fish, and I'd like to be able to keep a species from becoming extinct, but is this an appropriate activity for a vegan?

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 4 of 13

Animal Ethics

Would the blood drinker be sinning against the principles of lactovo moral vegetarianism or just the principles of vegan moral vegetarianism? Suppose there was a breed of sheep that became very ill when the sheep’s fleece was removed; they did not function normally. But they do point up the difficulty of making any general distinction between parts and products and the correlated difficulty of making a clear distinction between vegan and lactovo vegetarianism.
