The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. If the train did not go all of the way then we took a connecting bus or walked. We dropped our bags and got changed and hopped back on the train to go to the end of the line at Pasir Ris. It was 13:52 and we were alone in that area of the reserve.

These Burrowing Owl photos were taken at a rare breeding site in Vacaville California. Burrowing Owls are notoriously difficult to spot, even for the trained eye, since they are low to the ground and blend in to their background. If this bird doesn’t deserve this conservation award, I don’t know what species does.

At the beginning of the 20th century they were nearly extinct, with no breeding pairs left in the west of Germany and just very few in Germany’s East. On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. There are 70 species that are known to breed in the park.
