This region is so far from the northern breeding grounds that there are no migratory corridors to show.

This species is a southern African endemic, restricted to, but fortunately not uncommon, in dry woodland and sand forest habitats of northern Zululand, Swaziland, scattered pockets of north-eastern South Africa and southern Mozambique. We had been driving through Eswatini (Swaziland) for a few hours during the day, coming from Ndumo. These hornbills have the well-tried breeding strategy of enclosing the female in a tree hole. I usually do not write much about traveling to and from birding places but my friend and I arrived in Malelane in the afternoon.

South Africa’s endemic birds

Males of this species are more brightly colored in their non-breeding winter plumage. Another near-endemic, shared only with tiny Lesotho and Swaziland is the bizarre Southern Bald Ibis. A dancing Blue Crane , South Africa’s national bird. My final bird for this post is another of my favorites, the Ground Woodpecker.
