In September, I had the fantastic opportunity to travel to an increasingly popular destination for birding: Honduras. As one who is perennially interested in biogeography, the birds found in the upper elevations of Honduras were of particular interest to me. In short, the mountain birding in Honduras promised a slew of cool new birds.

That still leaves 11 Warblers that breed in Michoacán. Like the Common Yellowthroat , the Yellow Warbler breeds no further south than the central Mexican highlands. I must admit that I had the idea the Grace’s Warbler , common in our pine forests, were also at the southern edge of their breeding range here.

So, if you are going to write a field guide on the birds of the countries south and east of Mexico–Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—it makes the utmost sense that you embrace the whole geographic area. It has been a long time between field guides for most of these countries.

Most birders, attuned as they are to the rhythms of the natural world, probably noticed when migration ended and bird breeding began in their areas. I’m still recovering from last week’s veritable banquet of birding in Honduras, which I’ll be writing about soon.

In Costa Rica, the sole tropical breeding albatross is a rare visitor to pelagic waters of the Pacific. A more surefire way to witness this long-winged bird is by visiting breeding grounds on the Galapago Islands. Two are pelagic species, two are resident, and the other one is a mystery. Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata).

But the Steller’s Jay is also a year-round (and very noisy) resident of Mexico’s highest forests, and can be found all the way south to Honduras. The American Dipper lives and breeds along our cleanest mountain streams… or so they tell me. I have yet to have the thrill of seeing one.
