Guide to the Birds of Honduras: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Guide to the Birds of Honduras is an extraordinary creation, noteworthy for both the excellence of the work itself and the years of work that went into making it a reality. Gallardo has been a professional bird guide in Honduras since 2001 and first came to the country as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1993 (his “Chronology of Field Work in Honduras” is a chapter in the book). Europe, and Honduras itself. Guide to the Birds of Honduras.

Birding in Honduras, Part I: Highlands

10,000 Birds

In September, I had the fantastic opportunity to travel to an increasingly popular destination for birding: Honduras. As one who is perennially interested in biogeography, the birds found in the upper elevations of Honduras were of particular interest to me. One of these islands may have been the present day Northern Central American Highlands which includes Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and parts of extreme southern Mexico (Chiapas).

Warblers that Warble

10,000 Birds

That still leaves 11 Warblers that breed in Michoacán. Like the Common Yellowthroat , the Yellow Warbler breeds no further south than the central Mexican highlands. It does breed in the U.S.

Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Northern Central America: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

So, if you are going to write a field guide on the birds of the countries south and east of Mexico–Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—it makes the utmost sense that you embrace the whole geographic area. This book is a field guide treat for traveling birders and birders who love to fantasize about travel, answering that age-old question, “I’m going on a trip to [fill in the blank—Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras], what field guide should I use?”.

Birds of Central America: A Field Guide Review

10,000 Birds

Birds of Central America: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rican, and Panama , just published in October, is a field guide that was ten years in the making. The guide covers the all–1194 species in the Species Accounts, including 959 native breeding species, 219 Nearctic migrants, 8 breeding visiting species, and 5 introduced species. Of the native breeding species, 112 are endemic or “very nearly endemic.” (Can

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of June 2018?

10,000 Birds

Most birders, attuned as they are to the rhythms of the natural world, probably noticed when migration ended and bird breeding began in their areas. I’m still recovering from last week’s veritable banquet of birding in Honduras, which I’ll be writing about soon. Calendar spring is nearly at an end, but nature summer started a while ago.

My Northern Birds

10,000 Birds

But the Steller’s Jay is also a year-round (and very noisy) resident of Mexico’s highest forests, and can be found all the way south to Honduras. The American Dipper lives and breeds along our cleanest mountain streams… or so they tell me.

Admiring Anhingas

10,000 Birds

In fact, prior to my visit to Florida in January for the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival, I had never seen an Anhinga at all save one lousy look in Honduras back in 2009. And their plumage, especially their breeding finery, is a sight to see. Anhinga , otherwise known as Snakebird , Water Turkey , or American Darter * – and more formally as Anhinga anhinga – is a bird I have long wanted to see in New York State.

Serendipity Plus Avocado = Yellow-billed Cuckoo

10,000 Birds

Snow has touched down in some places up north, up there on the breeding grounds of Mourning Warblers , Baltimore Orioles , and Sharp-shinned Hawks. Did it stop off in Mexico, Honduras, or Florida? Although some of the tougher Sharpies stayed behind to risk stalking Black-capped Chickadees and Blue Jays in a winter landscape, millions of orioles, grosbeaks, and wood-warblers with a strong instinct for survival flew the coup back in September.

Birds of Bolivia: Field Guide–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Like most maps, colors are used to indicate seasonal status (breeding resident, Austral migrant/visitor, Boreal migrant, etc.).

The Domestic Turkey and the First Thanksgiving

10,000 Birds

The one case that could have been an actual Turkey was a bird spotted in Honduras, where they may or may not have been, by our friend Christopher Columbus. The chance that this was a real Turkey are not great, and the chance that Columbus actually brought breeding stock from Honduras to Spain is not great, so maybe, maybe not. This is the time of year that we rightfully contemplate the noble Turkey.

Gulls Simplified: A Gull Book Review

10,000 Birds

Three helpful sections precede the Introduction: Photo and silhouette comparisons of gulls that breed in North America (see illustration above), Basic Anatomical Terms illustrated with four diagrams, and a very selective Glossary. So, Laughing Gull is described in its Adult Breeding, Adult Nonbreeding, Immature, and Subadult forms; Western Gull is described in its Adult, Immature, and Subadult forms. I’m not a larophile*, but some of my favorite birders are.
