First I have to say that my husband and I were in our courtyard last night, with wine, vegan pizza with shiitakes, portobellos and chanterelles (still working through that five-pound bag of Daiya cheese), and Diana Krall playing. But today's post is about World Vegan Day, so onward. Some go vegetarian first, then vegan.

Other than being a vegan, the most important actions you can take to help animals who are used for food are: Give generously to organizations that help those sentient nonhumans directly, such as Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary , Maple Farm Sanctuary , Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary and Eastern Shore Sanctuary.

Activist Releases 1500 Mink in Oregon

According to Bite Back Magazine , an activist released 1500 mink from a farm in Astoria. In the early morning hours of October 17th, a lone activist infiltrated the fur farm at 92659 Simonsen Road in Astoria Oregon. About 1,500 mink were released from their cages with at least 200 of these being breeding stock.

On "Knockout Animals"

Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. That action is to opt out and go vegan.

Lessons Learned, The Finale

That original thought was a true statement, as free-range, grass-fed beef requires so much expense and land and water that not as many animals can be sustained as in an intensive farming situation. Lesson #20 We still don't know what will make a critical mass of people go vegan. Obviously (I think), education is the key.

An Affront to the Idea of Family

The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned. And they certainly wouldn't hurt anybody; that's what those big factory farms do that aren't owned by families.
