After securing our passage, I patiently waited for this once-in-a-lifetime experience to a place we have never been and lacked any knowledge of, we were in for a complete surprise. About half of all breeding Wandering Albatross nest on the Prince Edward Islands. We arose each morning at 4:30am to find out that we were late to the game.

In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. You can see why here. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets.

Getting to actually see four species, in the last two weeks, and to hear two more is almost unheard of in my experience. A little less than a mile away, there is a spot where a nice population of Burrowing Owls, have been relocated in hopes of starting a new breeding population. This is a look at the man-made burrow openings.

Come September most of the summer seabird people had left, but there were a small number of seabirds still breeding and so I stayed behind for three years to continue their monitoring and do the migrant landbird surveys, as well as the Great White Shark surveys. It was astonishing, like a game drive in the savannah of Africa.
