Pied Oystercatchers breeding in Broome

This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. The first eggs were laid in the first week of July, which is the case each year.

Critically Endangered: Sociable Lapwing

In an open Maruti Gypsy, we are heading north from Dasada in the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, along a rather decent tarmac road, between the wheat fields and passing camel carts. Sociable Lapwings breed in several areas along the Kazakhstani – Russian border and overwinter in Iraq, Sudan and northwest India.

One pair of Pied Oystercatchers nest just north of the rocks on Cable Beach and have to deal with the four-wheel drive vehicles and camels on the beach, but as soon as the eggs have hatched out they move the family approximately two kilometres further north through the dune system.

And what I met there was – well, a Barred Warbler, a Greenish Warbler, a Spotted Flycatcher all headed for their breeding grounds further north. It ain’t a camel and it ain’t a horse. But also, yet again to my utter surprise, a single Tolai Hare. what is this thing? And it walks on its hind legs.

The first was five beautiful Lazuli Buntings , all in their bright breeding plumage. It paused just long enough for one quick photo.

There has been growth in the breeding population at the colonies in Morocco (now estimated at 106 breeding pairs and approximately 500 birds in total).

Pied Oystercatcher breeding has started!

We monitor the Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach each year and it can all be covered on foot or by bicycle-tide dependant! There have been over 60 eggs lost to predation each year from these 16 pairs of birds and only one successful breeding where the chick has been flying and dependant each year.
