The Importance of Citizen Science in Mexico

10,000 Birds

Birding in Mexico is not like birding in the United States… especially when it comes to interpreting unusual sightings. There was the Yellow-billed Cuckoo that Mexico’s #1 birders pointed out to me one June, well south of its official summer range. In fact, I’ve come to expect to see them year-round.

There goes the neighborhood

10,000 Birds

When you are an American expatriate who lives, and birds, in Mexico, it is a topsy-turvy world. So go ahead and take your summer breeders back. However, the platform did not allow me to include photos. Since I consider myself a better writer than photographer, I can live with that. They will return to me soon enough.

These birds have been known to be prolific breeders, with as many as 8 broods a year, and each clutch holding from 5-13 eggs. I have gotten to observe 6 different family groups here on the Southern Baja, of Mexico, and none of them had more than 4 young that were with the parent.

The species ranges widely across the Pacific, as its scientific name suggests, from the Revillagigedo Islands off Mexico to the Japanese Bonin Islands to New South Wales in Australia. Another difference is that the Christmas Shearwater is a surface breeder whereas the Wedgie breeds in burrows. Pale and dark morph side-by side.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

10,000 Birds

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. These neotropical migrants had just completed a 600-mile nonstop journey across the Gulf of Mexico.

A Colorful Finch in Colorful Colorado

10,000 Birds

The grasslands have been popping off with breeders for well over a month, but the snow is just now giving way to lush alpine meadows and rocky tundras. This is my time of year to explore thin air and look for unique Colorado breeders. Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico.
