The reserve, in the eastern corner of Botswana near Zimbabwe and South Africa, isn’t open to the public in general, so I figured I’d share a few images here by way of showing off. As well as birds, the reserve holds endangered species like African Wild Dogs. I mean education. Crested Barbets come in close.

You may have read my recent piece on Birding the Okavango Delta in Botswana here on 10,000 Birds. On our last visit to the grasslands of Manas we saw not one but two endangered Bengal Floricans in fifteen minutes, with a Pied Falconet thrown in for good measure! However, I have another ongoing love affair, with India.

The UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in Geneva voted in favour of China becoming a licensed importer. It will allow China to bid for more than 100 tonnes of ivory stockpiled in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe through culling and natural deaths.

We break for… a beautiful Malabar Whistling Thrush (another lifer), only to discover a busy bird party: Asian Paradise-flycatcher (my first white morph male and the second paradise-flycatcher in my life list – I have observed an African one in Botswana before), Black-hooded Oriole , White-browed Fantail , Oriental White-eye , Red-breasted Flycatcher (..)

The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. Botswana: I Still Have No Idea Award. New Zealand: The Didn’t Bloody Even See It Award. I saw a number of lifers this year in New Zealand, but my bird of the year is one I heard but didn’t see.
