I have an unusual number of e-mails from individuals who have written, are writing, or would like to write a book about animals and asked about various steps in the publishing process. Books are obvious opportunities for advocacy and vegan education. There are entire books written about query letters.

Well, I think the grenade metaphor also applies to conversion to veganism. There is often lag time between the critical mass event and its accompanying decision to go vegan--and the the actual doing: being a vegan. There's intention, then the becoming, then the vegan. What does this mean? What happened in those years?

The PF Chang update, in case you haven't seen the response from the restaurant , is thus, once you incorporate the actual experiences of vegans who have gone through something similar with the restaurant: If you don't eat non-vegan sugar, there aren't many options. Sometimes the person who championed the book goes elsewhere.

The book, which I have not read, that saved Derrick Jensen 's life is called The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability by Lierre Keith, who was a vegan for 20 years, suffered serious medical problems, and started feeling better when she recommenced eating animals. Throughout the book, Keith mocks vegetarians and vegans.

I could be reading into this, but it does appear that there's some discomfort on the part of non-vegans when they look through the calendar and I tell them the story. And when you're checking out at the health food store with your cans and bag of vegan dog food, how could that not be a seedy opportunity?

My clients have always been a combination of experts who already have book deals with large publishers, and entrepreneurs who say Why on Earth would I let them take so much of my potential profits? In my experience, what holds back most authors from self-publishing is one word: ego. But what's the goal?
