My random number of 20 Lessons Learned From 4 Years of Blogging at Animal Person (for the others go to #1-6 , #7-10 and #11 & 12 ) ends today with #13-20, which is far longer than I thought it would be. If I had it all to do again, I'd do a video blog and I'd get at least proficient at the technical aspects. Sorry about that.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites). I also blogged about that dreamy day.

Apparently, some bird photographers think that any human artifacts shown on a bird photo immediately spoil the whole photo. And of course, on a rather rare occasion for this blog, an almost perfect link to the next bird (my favorite transition is still the Monty Python one: “And now for something completely different”).

Hopefully, as he is the owner of a birding company, Rockjumper, at least he gets some clients this way. I tried the same line of argument in high school, did not help me much.

As a result of human interference, four Chimney Swift nestlings had to be rescued. The release was beautifully documented and videotaped by the talented photographer Paul Roedding , and recorded as a blog on his website. What turned out to be an epic journey began in Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s Atlantic provinces.

The human and economic consequences were dramatic, and continue to be felt. Moreover, the recovery appears to be largely consistent with those of earlier well-documented hurricanes, such as Hugo in 1989. He also answered questions for a Q&A on the ABA Blog. 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the American Birding Association.

Some of his finds are the first documented records of the bird in that area or the first decent photograph of a little-known species. I enjoy these books tremendously, and I know other birders, some blogging here, who gobble them up. The books work best when the birding is coupled with the human element.

Writing a post scheduled for January 1st for a birding blog is a big responsibility. Interestingly, when I checked eBird to see how many birders reported the Cranes at this specific location, there was absolutely no documentation, even though I had seen reports on my eBird alerts and on Florida Facebook pages. Well, not really a bird.
