One of the birding highlights of our trip was not only having two Pallid Cuckoos feeding around our tent, but that they were quite cooperative at landing in an open area with a nice blue sky background! All other cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and let them raise them. Such are the vagaries of living in the tropics!

As it turns out we can add their birds to that list. When I photographed a pair a couple of years ago that were sporting radio tags , I assumed (and it may be the case) that they were two birds of twenty tagged that year in Virginia. I returned the next day and found that the birds were still there.

In contrast to last year, when I began my year in tropical Cairns in Queensland, Australia, I began this year’s birding in my parent’s rural house in Cheshire in Northern England.
