What the rings reveal

Most serious bird photographers dislike taking pictures of birds wearing rings (or what on the other side of the Atlantic you call bands). I can sympathise, as a shiny new ring, clamped to a bird’s leg, rarely enhances its portrait. The information I received didn’t indicate the age of the bird.

Fur and Fangs rather than Feathers and Beaks

Note the short legs, stout body and white rump and tail I see Muntjac on virtually every birding (or dog-walking) outing, as these small Asian deer are now very numerous around my home in the Suffolk Brecks. I’ve yet to see one in the UK, but I had a memorable encounter with one while birding from a small boat on a river in Lithuania.

If you’re a British birder, or a birder looking in to British birding, you could be forgiven sometimes for feeling it bears all the hallmarks of a good soap opera depending on where you surf. They provide little in the way of inspiration to the average birder and offer little real insight into birding in Britain in the 21st century.
