It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. And us, the birders who travel here from March to May to worship the birds as they seek to survive.

The birders birding on a budget and doing a lower-48 big year, Renee Rubin and Michael Delesantro , are doing nicely at 614 species for the year, amazing considering how little money they have spent. Not only that, but they are doing their big year to raise money for the Houston Audubon Society and the Katy Prairie Conservancy.

Bird races, as anyone who’s competed in one knows, can be big fun. The addition of a competitive component adds a thrilling edge of urgency to the normally relaxed act of chasing birds. Even sitting around watching birds can be charged with adrenaline when team pride is on the line. Yee-haw!

A new Australian Big Year Record was set by John Weigel, who did his big year to raise money for Tasmanian Devil conservation. The birders who birded on a budget and did a Lower-48 Big Year, Renee Rubin and Michael Delesantro , managed to track down 654 species, amazing considering how little money they have spent.
