It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. And us, the birders who travel here from March to May to worship the birds as they seek to survive.

Trillium Brewing Company: Stumpy Duck American Pale Ale

Iโ€™ll be the first to admit the selection of ducks so far at Booze and Birds has been rather paltry. Stumpy Duck is part of Trilliumโ€™s Small Bird Series, a collection of lighter, lower-alcohol beers brewed for summer, with each can sparingly decorated with a different bird in miniature. Not exactly a small bird.

Gulf Coast Ribbon Snake

Positive reinforcement tells me that I should be finding snakes in Houston, TX. The first one was found simply by accident, but consistent herpetological luck at Houston’s Arboretum makes me look harder and longer until I find one. This is the Gulf Coast Ribbon Snake Thamnophis proximus orarius.

Big Year Birding Update

The birders birding on a budget and doing a lower-48 big year, Renee Rubin and Michael Delesantro , are doing nicely at 614 species for the year, amazing considering how little money they have spent. Not only that, but they are doing their big year to raise money for the Houston Audubon Society and the Katy Prairie Conservancy.
