After Corey shared his story of his hedgehog experience in Hungary I thought you may like to see some rather adorable pictures of a young European Hedgehog in England. It appears that hedgehog numbers in the UK have dropped by 25% in the last 10 years , so every hedgehog that can be saved is extremely worthwhile.

” It turns out it was a hedgehog, a Northern White-breasted Hedgehog to be exact. Neither of us had ever seen any species of hedgehog and it is no wonder that we were both surprised and excited to see such a cool little creature. New Zealand has a host of hedgehogs but they are introduced.

Note the short legs, stout body and white rump and tail I see Muntjac on virtually every birding (or dog-walking) outing, as these small Asian deer are now very numerous around my home in the Suffolk Brecks. I’ve yet to see one in the UK, but I had a memorable encounter with one while birding from a small boat on a river in Lithuania.

Before I get into the nitty-gritties of my awesome birding experiences in Hungary I thought I would just share a few of the shots that I got during the trip. But there was more than birds – there were great mammals, insects, landscapes, food, and people. I’m baaack! And what a trip to Hungary it was!

Two-thousand-twelve was a pretty darn good year for me birding-wise and otherwise. Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties. I went to the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. Mottled Duck ?

So, to claim that I birded Inner Mongolia is a massive exaggeration. Let’s move to the birds). A bit reminiscent of the fable of the hare and hedgehog, with me as the hare (I guess) due to my use of planes etc., In other words, a hedgehog should always take care that his wife is also a hedgehog, and so forth.”

These serve a couple of important roles – foliage provides cover for animals and a defense against predators, and flowers attract insects, which in turn attract insectivores such as hedgehogs, shrews and a variety of birds. Berry-producing plants are also used as a food source by a variety of creatures.
