We have just returned from an incredible three weeks in Singapore, where unlike many others who visit the country we spent the whole time in nature parks, forests and gardens observing birds. The only shopping we did was to buy fresh fruit and some Asian snacks for while we were out all day hiking and birding.

As you know, I started to bird from a canoe, exploring the Danube backwaters in Belgrade, Serbia. When inundated, in spring, it is exciting to paddle through the trees, yet birds that often forage on the ground will be pushed away. Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport. Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing.

Although only just over a week had passed since our last visit the temperature was a good ten degrees less than our previous visit and the birding was quite different. The steps were very busy with people attempting the trail in one or both directions and there was evidence of a bird of prey at work in that valley. Crimson Rosella.

Whilst we were planning our trip to Sydney we were hoping to fit some hiking and birding into our schedule and found a great website that would help us decide on some walks. As it was about 10kms long we knew it would take more than the 4 hours mentioned if we were birding, so would be a day out. We continued on along the trail.
