Man and bear even celebrated Christmas and New Year together, joined in the straw-lined pen by Doerflein's girlfriend, Daniela Kaiser, and her six year-old son, Louis. The extraordinary bond which had been built between bear and man was to be severed.

Here is an adorable video of Knut as a cub: Knut was on the cover of Vanity Fair, his 4th birthday party was attended by 250 people, and he was known as “The Star of the Berlin Zoo&# ! Knut, you will be missed!

In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo. With enough room for another, of course.

The decision about where to hike had nothing to do with the Cerulean Warblers that are found breeding at Doodletown.
