Birding the Bear Mountain of Serbia

A narrow forest road takes us to the chain blocking the entrance, with a sign “Area closed – bear danger”. This feeding station is not here for the tourists: in order to lower the bee-hive raiding (even the Serbian word for a bear, medved, comes from the word honey – med), supplementary feeding was offered to local bears for several decades.

Fur and Fangs rather than Feathers and Beaks

My only wolf sightings have been in Spain, in December, and at great range. A Red Fox in Georgia, not looking very red I’ve never been to Svalbard, so I haven’t ticked off polar bear, but I have seen brown bears on a number of occasions in both Romania and Bulgaria. They particularly like chocolate!) in the evening.

“Condors over Cologne” – Rogue Ales & Spirits: Condor Kolsch

Kölsch bears a superficial resemblance to Pilsner, with which it was originally brewed to compete, but it’s softer, rounder, and more gently hopped, and thanks to its warm fermentation, it often offers subtly fruity, even wine-like notes entirely unheard of in lagers. With enough room for another, of course.

Our Best Birds of 2020

Chamois is an agile goat-antelope with short hooked horns, found in mountainous areas of Europe from Spain to the Caucasus. It bears an iconic name associated with insanity and betrayal, but also with time and seasonality. In a second, it disappeared into trees, down towards a rocky gorge, but not before I spotted it. Preposterous!
