I have a question about weird animal encounter when I was kid in Upstate NY.

What do yall think bear or mountain lion? (I was scared outta my mind so possibly alot shorter than what I perceived) it was a very loud mid town growl/snarl and the banging on trees was pretty loud. In the morning we ran back to the house and didn't go out after that. So I don't know if there were any tracks.
