Was hiking through the southern Japanes Alps today (near Fuji) and ran into these tracks and droppings a few times. The paw prints scream bear to me, but the droppings seemed to small (they were maybe 50cm away from each other). I was curious to which animal they belonged.

The Ural Owl inhabits old and undisturbed boreal forests, in an unbroken belt from Sweden and Finland across Russia to Japan, and is rarely seen to the south, only here and there, in the Carpathians (Slovakia/Ukraine/Romania/eastern Serbia) and Dinaric Alps (Croatia/Bosnia/western Serbia).

Late last month, while searching for bears , woodpeckers and spirits of Greece, I deliberately avoided checking any news, especially from my home country. We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. The way I see it, it is a cruel joke leading towards the extinction of a threatened species.

However my ‘twitch’ pales in comparison with the big twitch undergone by a couple of Brit birders in recent days who headed out to Japan on a 5814 mile twitch (and that was just to get there!) for a drake Baer’s Pochard.

The fish owl is an endangered species, and before Slaght’s work, very little was known about it, especially in Russia. (It It is also native to Japan, where it is protected and protectively studied to the point where Slaght had trouble getting any information.). I just need to get me to Japan. by Jonathan C.
