Rarer than Tigers: the Indian Wild Dog

India, February 2013. I am camping in the dry-deciduous jungle in eastern Maharashtra, near the geographic heart of India. These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc. Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low. It is February and evenings are cold.

Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home!

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. At least 274 tigers have died in India in the last four years, more than 70 per cent of them due to poaching. The Telia Lake.

Rosefinches, Griffons and Woodcocks

I have observed it previously in India, but never in Europe… but will have to settle with a voice and no sight. Eurasian Griffon Vultures are flying towards the restaurant (occasionally visited by Brown Bear , too). I am checking the crown-tops, there is a Common Whitethroat … but I can hear the Rosefinch.
