This is my first visit to this area, known as the Madz Brod, where two new breeding species for the country were discovered a decade ago. Eurasian Griffon Vultures are flying towards the restaurant (occasionally visited by Brown Bear , too). And a bit more. I am underdressed and getting cold.

Am I willing to give up the field guide which bears the mud and dirt of so many falls on so many birding trips? It gets very confusing when I’m trying to look at subspecies descriptions in multiple field guides (“Slate-Colored Fox Sparrow” in Sibley West, for example, is “Western Slate-colored Group” in Stokes West).

Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range. among the Mustilids, and Coyotes and to a lesser extent Foxes.

They claimed 15 species of bejeweled hummingbirds, 36 wood warblers, a Flame-colored Tanager , Greater Roadrunners (straight from the cartoon), and an oddly perched, metallic green-headed fellow called the ‘elusive’ Elegant Trogon. Pre-Internet, I got all my birding info from print magazines; and WildBird was my go-to back in the day.

The author, conservation biologist Caroline Fox, is observing the albatross’s shadow to the side of the boat. She doesn’t know the species till it emerges, almost dreamlike, from the heavy glare of the sun. Fox notes the albatross in her “soaking-wet notebook” and watches it circle and fly back into the masking glare.
