Recently Received

Being based on this island for the better part of this year has afforded me the opportunity (for the first time) to bear witness to the movement of bodies through these quarters – and it continues to be exhilarating. So the truth is – I wasn’t really sure if I had seen this species before or not.

One More Reason for Gratitude

Perhaps the fact that we really enjoy talking to each other had a slight negative impact on the number of species seen (“only” 52). Still, a male Archilochus hummer (of either species) is a rare treat here. Las Mesas is not my best hummingbird spot, but it’s definitely in my top 3.

A Near Conjunction

Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper in T&T, and they have a proportionately massive bill. Here, a considerable amount of the forest has been removed for the first hundred or two metres into the road, including several fruit-bearing trees that used to attract a myriad of higher altitude specialists.

Chacachacare Island

Walking along the beach and drifting sporadically into the dry forest, the first birds we heard were White-fringed Antwrens and Black-faced Grassquits – both are species not found on Trinidad but relatively common on Tobago. The bird of the day was definitely this White Hawk ! Northern Scrub Flycatcher.

Birding Sanming, Fujian

If you live south of the Yangtze river, by definition there is no need for heating, independent of how cold it is. The main attractions of the Sanming area are some pheasant species. The species that is classified as Near Threatened, which is a bit confusing given that the HBW talks of a population of more than 100,000 individuals.
