A narrow forest road takes us to the chain blocking the entrance, with a sign “Area closed – bear danger”. This feeding station is not here for the tourists: in order to lower the bee-hive raiding (even the Serbian word for a bear, medved, comes from the word honey – med), supplementary feeding was offered to local bears for several decades.

Let me start off with being quite clear, there are no grizzly Bears on the Baja! All of which, was for one a one day shoot with the famed bears, as they dined on the fall salmon run. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks.

Clearings around the house offer favourite grazing to small herds of Chital deer and a playground to Gray (or Hanuman) Langurs. Birds included common species such as Black Drongos , Jungle Babblers and a Hoopoe. These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc.

This year, a few months after my fortieth birthday, when I saw a Blue Jay in West Glacier Montana I felt only a small bit of surprise – it was an uncommon bird but no longer really extralimital as a wintering species. But shifting baseline syndrome doesn’t just apply to things that have become diminished.

Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. The forest grows on the new lakeshore and it, too, is a mere 15 years old, but already provides an important corridor for large mammals such as Roe Deer and even Brown Bears , which sometimes come down to feed on beans. Other taxa.

Talking to Jan Södersved the editor of the Birdlife Finland magazine Linnut whilst we were both in Portugal in early October suggested that all of the owl species in Finland had had a very productive breeding season. The numbers we have wintering in Britain are certainly bearing that out.
