I also only managed to see rather common bird species at Shennongjia, a nature reserve in Hubei province, China. In the past, Great Spotted Woodpeckers mostly lived off renting out their old apartments to other species. Kind of like kicking the bum roommate or partner out by only preparing really bad food.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Very interesting species. melli is the Hong Kong form that visits during the winter from southern China. The former British colony’s Z.c. melli strain is one of as many as 12 races and shows a lighter face than many of the others.
