I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. I also spent a week in northwestern Costa Rica on a family vacation, a long weekend in Barbados, a week in Georgia, and two week-plus-long trips to visit relatives in southern California. Number 7 – Barbados Bullfinch.

Machi the Whimbrel Gunned Down by Hunters

Guadeloupe, Martinique and Barbados continue to operate “shooting swamps” some of which are artificial wetlands created to attract migrant shorebirds for sport shooting during fall migration. Barbados, once a British colony is now an independent state and also not party to the Treaty. The last Eskimo Curlew known to science was shot on Barbados in 1963. Conservation organizations continue to work toward some compromise that will reduce pressures on declining species.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of April 2019)

The promised Northern Fulmar were easily spotted from atop the cliffs, but another species made more of an impression. Corey is loving the sun and sand and rum and birds in Barbados. But his best of the weekend was easily a bird that he was amazed he could see in Barbados, the long-staying Eurasian Spoonbill that he spotted in its usual hangout, a private impoundment on Congo Road.

They contributed 150 lists accounting for 1032 species and more than 36,000 individual birds. Thus 100 species were missed by the time he woke up and noticed that eBird had reset the counters at midnight(do you guys have nothing better to do?). They came home exhausted.
