All of 2016 only netted me one new species for Queens, a Greater White-fronted Goose. I will see at least 500 species for the year. So having reached 500 or more species in six of the last ten years makes me confident I can do it again. That really sucks. Over the last ten years my year list totals have varied quite a bit.

In my first trip to the West Indies , I learned that the Bahamas boast an impressive array of wild native doves including the Caribbean Dove and White-crowned Pigeon. The various islands also support more adaptable civilized species like Mourning Dove , Common Ground-Dove , and Rock Pigeon.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove ( Streptopelia decaocto ) was first released in the New World on the island of New Providence, in the Bahamas. The northwestern spread of this non-native species made it to my yard a few years ago. I am always alarmed when I see rapid expansion of a non-native species of any kind.

Although a reasonably common species in southern Florida, Gray Kingbird is especially abundant in the West Indies where even islanders not interested in birds are very familiar with this species.

Listservs across the state suddenly lit up with posts about where and how many of these alcids were being seen, with records streaming in from such unlikely places as Dry Tortugas National Park, Key West, Fort de Soto, and as far west as Pensacola — there had been only one previous record of this species in the Gulf of Mexico before 2012.

Last year it was New Providence in the Bahamas. A nice walk on the Boardwalk Trail and the Pine Grove Trail didn’t net us a ton of birds (twenty-five species in forty-five minutes) but we all appreciated being out and about in the great outdoors. Two years ago it was Culebra, Puerto Rico.

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. There are many species that captivate those looking at them: Burrowing Owls , Barn Owls , a variety of fishing-owls, Stygian Owl , Elf Owl , the list goes on and on. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins. You may not get the species counts that the race delivers, but you’ll have memories burned into your skull. In Hawaii I stood on a beach as albatrosses fledged and Tiger Sharks prowled for the less successful ones. In Belize I cruised above reefs few people had ever seen.

A Eurasian Collared-dove photographed by Mike in the Bahamas , which is pretty different from midwinter Montana Eurasian Collared-doves, as you may have gathered from the name, are not part of our native avifauna. The Collared-doves were introduced to the Bahamas in the 1970s, and from there apparently leapfrogged to the U.S.

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. At the end of the year, my tally for hummingbirds was 45 different species, but the winner hands down was the White-crowned Coquette that was found in the Quizarra area of Costa Rica.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species. They are found in the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Barbuda and Jamaica.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove , as Larry has already ably pointed out , has spread rapidly across North America since its release in the Bahamas in the mid-1970s. Though it is an invasive species it does not seem to be harming other species despite the concern about a potential negative impact on other Columbids.
