Yet, it takes great logistical effort to organize the census all the way from Germany to Austria, Hungary and Serbia in the same day, to count on numerous volunteers and hope for the best February weather. About that time, a raptor expert Istvan Ham joined us, and after David and I left to investigate areas closer to the Romanian border, Ham went walking closer to the birds. I woke up at 5 am, a good two hours before the sun (and I really hate to be up before the sun).

A few dead birds were collected by authorities and sent to a laboratory for investigation. The first detection outside Africa occurred in Vienna/Austria between 2001 and 2006. Okay, I meant to write an entertaining post. I honestly did. But I have been sick with different kinds and forms of cold since the beginning of December with no interruption, and so has my entire family.

I know for a fact that a certain birder from the US only joined an esteemed bird blog and blogged like a madman just so he would eventually be invited by makers of fine optics to Austria where he would have a chance at seeing his lifer white-throated dippers. Many wintering “Black-bellied” Dippers in Germany are colour-banded to investigate numbers and site fidelity. I have yet to meet a birder who did not consider dippers to be special.

Capuchin monkeys, macaques, Cotton Top Tamarins, Chimpanzees, and many other animals, including various birds, have been investigated and found to be unable to make inferences about HCAs. And most recently, a team of researchers from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Austria have demonstrated that New Caledonian Crows understand UCAs. We know that the human mind has capacities that are not common in other animals.
