As keen birdwatchers, who just happened to have found the Night Parrots in Western Australia, they were keen to look for the Fairy Pitta at first light the next day. This was only to be the second record for Australia. We noted that the Sobrane Gallery had a lot of leaf litter underneath it. There it was!

Sacred Kingfisher The edge of the creek as we got closer to the ocean was littered with pearl shells and we presume that these must have broken free during the cyclone season earlier in the year. There were five Sacred Kingfishers flitting from rock to rock as we followed the creek. There were some rather nice specimens.

By the time we had reached Wyndham in the north of Western Australia we had encountered Gouldian Finches , but it was not until we were at a small billabong between Wyndham and Kununurra that I was able to photograph them. Although they are distributed across the north of Australia and down the east coast they are easily overlooked!

The Rufous Treecreeper- Climacteris rufa is a species that is listed as a bird that you should encounter at the Porongurup National Park in Western Australia’s south-west. Rufous Treecreeper feeding among the leaf litter.

Tika and her longtime mate, Kobuk, had raised eight litters of puppies together and were enjoying their retirement years in the home of my friend, Anne. In Torquay, Australia, after a mother kangaroo was struck by a car, a dog discovered a baby joey in her pouch and took it to his owner who cared for the youngster.

Around the picnic area at the weir the Galahs were busy on the ground feeding and the ground was also littered with the tips of the trees. It was completed in 1903 and it delivers water to the Goldfields area of Western Australia via a pipe that is over five hundred kilometres/three hundred miles long.

The hinterland produced some amazing birds and we did find it hard work looking so high into the trees to find the Catbird that continuously called and the Wompoo Fruit Dove, but the leaf litter below also produced some well-disguised birds. The absolute highlight was when I heard leaf litter being thrown about.

The weather has not been very warm at all in this part of Australia despite it being summer and we have been fortunate to have not been affected by the awful bush-fires. They are usually busy throwing leaf litter around on the forest floor. I have become very familiar with the birds along the trail. Eastern Whipbird.

Ferns were prominent and it was very easy to walk quietly due to all of the damp leaf litter. The gully was really quite steep in places. In the gully! If you interested in plants you will love this walk! One of the risks with birding in forests (stopping still for too long!) are leeches and I do seem to attract them more than Grant!

There was no sound of the bird calling, but we came across several pairs busy turning over the leaf litter to find food. Birding Australia Australian birds Melbourne parrots treecreeper' It did look like the sort of area that you may hear the Eastern Whipbird, which does indeed sound like a whip cracking in the forest.
