Eggs in a Pied Oystercatcher nest I always walk by briefly to confirm the number of eggs, but it is very rarely more than two eggs in Broome. I suppose they know me!

In Australia we definitely have our fair share of invasive species and the main problem is that we are such a huge land mass with such a small population. The population of Australia is concentrated mainly around the city areas along the coast and many invasive species have been able to spread with ease.

In Australia there are three populations of Little Tern. There are Little Terns that breed across the north of Australia, Little Terns that breed on the coast of eastern and south-eastern Australia and another population that visit at this time of year from Asia.

Although I have written about this small resident shorebird breeding in the past I have now been able to obtain photographs of it maintaining egg temperature on very hot and dry days. We sat down and only a few moments later one of the pair of Black-fronted Dotterels walked towards us and hovered over two eggs!

I dug a hole for a sewage pit in Australia and found this little egg in the hole I was digging, it had embryo in it and had heaps of little copper wire like ears. does anyone know what this animal could of been? I put it in a draw but the next morning it was gone. Im thinking echidna maybe? No I wasn’t high.

Our current travel restrictions in Western Australia allow us to roam around our own state. In the header photo and below you can see the adult is shading three eggs. Comb-crested Jacana shading three eggs. There was an egg that had floated off and it was not clear if it could be saved.

We are lucky in Western Australia that we can move around our own state. We can’t move around the rest of Australia or go overseas, but keeping everyone safe is a priority. So much has happened in the world in their absence from Australia. There has been no community transmitted coronavirus for many months.

The breeding season started early this year with the first eggs laid at the end of May. This pair of Pied Oystercatchers have incubated two clutches of eggs and had chicks for a few days on both occasions. The eggs hatched out this week and the tides are very big, so there is a huge expanse of sand when the tide goes out.

Earlier this year when we first observed Comb-crested Jacanas close to Broome they had just arrived from further north in Australia. The male Comb-crested Jacana builds the nest, incubates the eggs and cares for the young. We have observed nests in the past further north.

They are widespread throughout Australia , but it does not mean you necessarily easily observe them. By the size of the juvenile birds the adults must have laid the eggs several months ago when the rains came to that area of Western Australia. That was our first Yellow-billed Spoonbill for 2021, so that was exciting in itself.

Sadly they were not successful with their first clutch of eggs, but are busily making nest scrapes again. We are hopeful that soon they will have laid another clutch of eggs. Since then we have had the two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that breed between the Surf Club and Gantheaume Point lay their first clutch of eggs.

Hooded Plovers are only found in the south of Australia and they are not abundant in any location. There are two populations and our last encounter was in the south of Western Australia almost two years ago. I soon noticed the shallow nest scrape, but there were not any eggs in it yet. Whistling Kites are widespread across Australia and around Broome they help clean up the carrion along with the Black Kites. We normally encounter our first Pied Oystercatcher nest with eggs in it around the first week of July. In 2016 one pair of Pied Oystercatchers laid an egg early on June 11th. We have often suspected that the Sand Goannas would steal eggs as a food source from the Pied Oystercatcher nests if they found them. The two pairs should have been close to hatching their eggs from their first clutch. The pair of Pied Oystercatchers to the north have now laid a second clutch of two more eggs.

We had been patiently awaiting the arrival of the two chicks since the eggs were laid a month ago. I took a few photos of the chick that had hatched out and the remaining egg. Since I found the first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 I have learnt that the eggs rarely hatch due to predation and if they do hatch then a fully fledged chick is a rare and wonderful outcome. This year has been like other years with the first eggs being laid late June and the first chicks hatching recently.

Red-capped Plover nest We have mostly observed Red-capped Plover nests with two eggs, so she may well have laid another egg by now. The area was extremely exposed and at risk of being stood on or run over by a vehicle.

Over the past few months we have had a variety of Cuckoos calling and looking for a mate and the sound of any Cuckoo in Australia is completely different to the European Cuckoo. The Cuckoos in Australia call shrilly and in a frantic descending or ascending call and often you will only hear the variety of species and not actually observe them.

Our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs for this year’s breeding season were laid early and were due to hatch last weekend. Birdlife Australia mentions on their website that the female Mistletoebird builds the nest and incubates, but they will both feed the young. Mistletoebird egg incubation is about 10-12 days and then there will be a further 15 days when the young will remain in the nest. It appears he has a role as a guard, but not as a builder!

The breeding season in the north of Australia starts from about July 1st and there are often several attempts if the eggs fail, are lost or the chicks don’t survive. On July 1st 2007 an egg was laid by a Pied Oystercatcher that was known to be an adult in 2002 and had been banded in nearby Roebuck Bay. Hermit Crab in lid.

The female Red-capped Plover immediately returned to the nest to incubate her eggs. The male Red-capped Plover was nearby and they generally incubate the eggs at night. Red-capped Plovers usually lay two very small eggs and they also need incubating for around twenty eight days similar to the Pied Oystercatchers.

One pair of Pied Oystercatchers laid eggs the first year and did not appear to realise they were supposed to sit on them, but they have since learnt it is an essential part of rearing a chick and they have done so since.

The first eggs were laid in the first week of July, which is the case each year. The eggs take 28 days to hatch and it is then at least 35 days before the chicks are developed enough to fly and there have been problems with predation as in other years. Feral cats are a huge problem in Australia and they do take a lot of the eggs. There are four pairs with eggs currently after the first pair lost their eggs, which they laid in the same location as last year. This pair laid a white egg last year on their second attempt in the exact same nest.
