Edward Brown (1810-1867) was a Victorian-age bird collector particularly active in East Asia, in whose honor this shrike species was named. A large nearby park, Shanghai Haiwan National Forest Park, seems mercifully deserted on weekdays, partly due to the stiff entrance fee, partly because it is not easily accessible by public transport.

In these rural areas, public transportation is still mostly based on rather old-fashioned modes. An HBW entry on this bird – at least to me – rather highlights the absurdity of some religious activities: “In SE Asia, widely trapped in large numbers for Buddhist religious purposes, but most birds are later released.”

Lakshmi rides an owl as her Vahana (a spirititual being or animal that transports a God) and the Spotted Owlet has been chosen to represent the family. Common throughout India with a range that covers much of South-east Asia, it can often be seen around habitation where it catches small rodents, insects and invertebrates.

It originally served as the port of entry for goods brought from Asia by Spanish galleons. These goods, purchased with Mexican silver, would then be transported overland through Mexico City, and shipped from Veracruz to Spain. Acapulco is built around one of the world’s most beautiful bays.

We managed to get everybody out and onto the transportation only about 45 minutes behind schedule, and as the sun rose over the regions famed White Desert, we were on our way southward. It wasn’t that long ago that Sociable Lapwing was considered a critically endangered species with a population of only around 1500.

And would have still direct the same ire towards starlings if the specie sin question were a different one, like, perhaps, Central Asia’s gorgeous Rosy Starling ? The group I was with gathered in Ahmedebad (one of India’s mid-sized cities with only 8 million residents) to be transported by bus out to the conference site in Kutch.
