Leapin’ Grassquits, Sandy!

Blue-black Grassquits are tiny birds, only four inches long, that are very common in subtropical savannah habitats from Mexico to Argentina. Breeding males are a deep, irridescent blue that often looks black, although in the off season they can look buffy-brown like the females, or, more often, a blotchy combination of the two color schemes.

The “Rufa” Red Knot is now protected under the Endangered Species Act

One of the two sub-species of Red Knot occurring in North America, the Rufa subspecies breeds in the Canadian Artic Region and migrates along the east or Atlantic coast of the United States. The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia.

The Andean Avocet

This is partly because it leaves at such high elevations (11,811 – 15,090 feet above sea level) along the high Andes of Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. American Avocet in breeding plumage. The Andean Avocet breeds in small groups in loose colonies scattered along the shallow saline lagoons at high elevation.

Is The Hooded Grebe About To Go Extinct?

Like most buteos, the Swainson’s Hawk feeds its young rodents, rabbits and reptiles but not so during non-breeding season. But that is another story.
