Students, veterinarians address animal welfare scenarios during annual contest

The 23rd annual AVMA Animal Welfare Assessment Contest, or AWJAC, took place November 17-19 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Participants completed in-person assessments of the welfare of animals in a variety of scenarios, including laboratory rats, farmed bison, cage-free laying hens, and tortoises in a zoo.

what is the consensus on zoos? I enjoy animals and love seeing them, but I feel so bad that they’re all captive and not out in the wild. Zoo websites tend to emphasize how they’re being ‘super helpful!’ by keeping the animals safe but I’m not sure how I feel. TLDR: zoos?

The Amusing Case of the Gulf Breeze Zoo Canada Geese

Next door to my hometown, the Gulf Breeze Zoo occupies 50 acres near the Santa Rosa Sound. The nest sat perilously close to a set of narrow train tracks, which guided an equally small train packed full of little kids and their parents to get a closer view of some of the animals.
