The soft thing that I accidentally had kicked was indeed the hedgehog. He curled to a ball and I first decided to turn the light off and leave space to him so that I stress the hedgehog as little as possible. I immediately started to reflect how much I potentially damaged the hedgehog. They are just so relaxed.

People have moved useful plants and animals around with them as long as they had the wit to do so. So that New Zealand would end up with quite a few species of animal not originally found here is hardly surprising of itself. But hedgehogs? In many ways, that is exactly what happened. Greenfinches? What exactly was going on.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).
