Humane Society Puts Pressure on South Carolina's Bear Baying

Critter News

A declawed, defanged bear is chained to a stake as hunting dogs bark and snap, trying to force the bear to stand on its hind legs. The training exercise called bear baying is intended to make the bears easier to shoot in the wild and it's only allowed in South Carolina. Animal rights advocates say it's cruel to the nearly defenseless bears and harms them psychologically. Statutes banning animal fighting have a specific exemption for dog training.

Polar Bear Supporters Lose Court Case

The complaint is that the government isn't doing enough to protect marine animals from the effects of oil and gas development. Getting Emotional

Creature Talk

Sometimes being an animal rights advocate is emotionally exhausting. Last night I was watching Animal Planet, as I often do, and the show was about polar bears in the wild. There was a mama polar bear and her 2 cubs who were not yet full grown, but also not tiny. Due to lack of food, a big male polar bear was following the threesome in the hopes that he could eat one of the cubs (apparently they will eat their own kind if they can’t find other food).

Lanthier, a veterinarian and walrus researcher who took the helm in Calgary two years ago, says the cancellation of the polar bears exhibit might please some animal-rights extremists, but the reality is a blow to Canada's white bears. Lanthier doesn't hide his contempt for animal rights groups who lash out, without considering the role zoos play in conservation.

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 3 of 13

Animal Ethics

Most moral vegetarians list fish and fowl as animals one should not eat. First, it may be argued that only animals who can feel pain are not to be eaten. KBJ: Nobody in the animal-rights or animal-liberation movement views intelligence as a morally significant property, at least intrinsically. Whatever one thinks about voluntary cannibalism among humans, it may be argued that the situation is very different with animals. Would these animals also be exploited?
