I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. They particularly like chocolate!) in the evening.

A narrow forest road takes us to the chain blocking the entrance, with a sign “Area closed – bear danger”. This feeding station is not here for the tourists: in order to lower the bee-hive raiding (even the Serbian word for a bear, medved, comes from the word honey – med), supplementary feeding was offered to local bears for several decades.

The species has been on my personal radar for North Carolina for years. For years it was a privately held nature museum and attraction, featuring animal enclosures, a fudge shop, and a “Mile-High” Swinging Bridge. I’ve taken them on twitches before , but it’s always been a dicey proposition.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. He also had tigers, cougars, and some other animals. This is approximated by the size of the animal, but really, this has to be adjusted for depending on modality of killing. Smaller and larger animals (if there are any) are taken by other creatures. That part of the carnivore landscape is taken by other animals.
