The animal rights movement is not for the faint of heart. How we change the dominant misconception of animals—indeed, whether we change it—is to a large extent a political question. To overcome the collective entropy of these forces-against-change will not be easy. Moral philosophy is no substitute for political action.

Mexico is notorious for its bullfights and lack of animal rights. From Fox News (blech). Senators from the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, are working on legislation to ban bullfights and guarantee animal rights in Mexico, a lawmaker said. And not very optimistic.

Fox 13 Now reported. A federal grand jury has indicted an animal rights activist who refused to testify about the release of thousands of mink from Utah ranches. Jordan Halliday, 22, served several months in jail for contempt of court after he said he invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination.

But there are animal rights activists in Mexico that will hopefully take notice and try to establish some kind of long-term and humane solution. From Latino Fox News. Activists said what the government was doing qualified as “animal torture,” and they called for legislative reform. Sarcasm there of course.

From this perspective, the animal-rights debate seems considerably less urgent and a relatively "safe" area of controversy. One wonders why here (as elsewhere) there is so much concern for the plight of animals and evidently so little for that of humans.

My basic moral position (as my emphasis on pleasure and pain and my quoting Bentham might have led Fox to suspect) is utilitarian. I make very little use of the word 'rights' in Animal Liberation , and I could easily have dispensed with it altogether.

Whether we are environmentalists, animal rights activists, or simply supporters of democracy, we have to remain vigilant. They will simply scurry off to their think tanks and Fox News. Especially about Sarah Palin and the possibility that this woman will return in 2012. Americans are a skittish bunch.
