Over $100 million went to medical research while about $1 million went to animal welfare causes. Actually, less than $1 million dollars went to animal welfare because a portion went to guide dog associations and that is human welfare as far as I’m concerned.) Originally, animal groups actually thought they’d get a huge piece of the estate because Leona Helmsley had supposedly wanted it that way. It’s more money for medical research.

DeRose will address the use of “Class B” animals in veterinary schools and research labs. Often the care of animals at such dealers is considered substandard.

Here are the results of the EU flirtation with restricting research on primates. Researchers can continue most experiments on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans -- after European Union lawmakers watered down proposals to restrict testing. The EU's executive Commission last year proposed a range of measures to improve the welfare of the 12 million vertebrate animals used in experiments each year, mostly mice and rats.

I don't support animal research and I have no sympathy for animal researchers. I don't believe they want an honest dialogue about what they are doing to animals. I don't believe they are "brave" for "standing up" to animal rights activists. I think they are clever cowards who use extremists to hide their work and to obfuscate the truth about what they do to animals and whether it is truly necessary.

It claims that it must research on animals in order to save people, but then charges such high costs for drugs to these same people that many, even in the rich country of the US, must forego them and risk their lives. But animal research is necessary, they also claim, because there are simply no other alternatives.

The feud between animal rights activists and researchers is among the bitterest in science. But many researchers - although adamant that animal research remains critical to finding cures and expanding medical knowledge - have come to concede that using creatures as human stand-ins is unnecessary for many procedures. Plus, animals are messy, require feeding and constant care, draw protests, and, yes, can be a bit smelly.

I've finally decided to take the plunge and really learn about animal experimentation. Apparently, there is a lot of argument out there than animal experimentation is even good for humans. A drug may work on an animal, but fail miserably on a human. And how can one expect an animal with a human disease to react the way the human body does? And, in this day and age, do we really need to be stuck with this archaic and barbaric method of research?
