Animal rights groups are calling for a ban on the sale of horse meat after disturbing video at a slaughterhouse in west Quebec was sent to the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition. For the coalition, it was added evidence there needs to be a ban on horse meat for more than just health reasons. Excerpted from CTV.CA.

How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act? No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there. The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. This is really interesting. I certainly didn't.

It is not just a few outspoken animal rights fanatics who hold this view. Animal abuse is a crime in all fifty states, and rightly so. Similarly, most people also agree that: (2) It is wrong to kill a conscious sentient animal for no good reason. Carruthers, The Animals Issue , p. No one disputes premise (3).

Yes, it is hypocritical (speciesism), but who said that we either protect humans or animals? Notice how the story ends: "The focus has now been narrowed to prevention of animal abuse, which is defined as inflicting unnecessary pain and brutality." But my initial reaction is that this is like Americans giving up "red meat."

So why is one type of animal cruelty (dogfighting) more reprehensible than another (lobster-boiling)? If you are a non-meat-eating, non-leather-wearing, non-shampoo-using, animal-rights activist for PETA, then it is not hypocritical to judge Vick for animal abuse. I think we have it backward.

These poor animals are literally running for their lives and we must do everything we can to educate people about their suffering and exploitation and work towards ending this horribly cruel activity because many people out there just don't know any different, so we must be the greyhound's best advocate and use our voice for theirs.
