We've written about the Calgary Zoo here before. To many people, the number of animal fatalities at the Calgary Zoo in newer years seemed very high. A hippo passed away following a long, horrible transfer from another zoo. Woodyer wanted Lanthier to quit and for the zoo’s accreditation to be taken away.

And Chilean Flamingos should be found, well, in Chile, as well as much of southwestern South America. So both birds are assumed by many to be escapees from a zoo or a private collection somewhere. American Flamingos do occur naturally in Mexico, but only on the Yucatán peninsula in the country’s extreme southwest.

Anyway, even this lower number puts China at rank 8 in the list of countries with the most bird species, surpassed only by Indonesia outside of the usual suspects in South America. I do not mind pandas much as long as they do not stand in front of interesting birds, blocking my view, so this was not really an obstacle.

While the Black-throated Laughingthrush is native to Southeast Asia, it is also kept at the Toronto Zoo and has its own web page there. However, as the zoo is (at the time of writing this post) closed due to covid, you still have to leave Canada and come to Southeast Asia to see it. Which (due to covid) you probably cannot.

Unlike North America, Germany has never had naturally occurring psittacines that went extinct, and the one we have is a true and complete invasive alien introduction. University campus at Im Neuenheimer Feld, particularly in the north (turn off Berliner Straße and into the street Im Neuenheimer Feld) and south (park at the zoo, see below).

Not more than four years following the final breath of the last living Passenger Pigeon , and at the same facility – the Cincinnati Zoo, whose place in ornithological history is morbidly established – the last Carolina Parakeet died. The 19-teens were not a good time for North American birdlife. It was called Incas.
