Coincidentally, last night was a board meeting for our homeowner's association, and though I wasn't on the agenda there's always time for homeowner comments about, say, the petting zoo and pony rides that are scheduled for the spring "BBQ" ( here 's part one of this story). And there's not much from the health angle for pony rides.

Name-calling and charges of agenda-promoting ensued. No buying invasive fish from the pet store and tossing them into a pond, where they will grow into behemoths and devour the native species. It’s over; the balloons all went up between 4:15 and 4:30 on a Monday. No one knows how many. No balloons.

On a local level we need to consider if we really do need to let our pets chase shorebirds and whether we really do need to drive along our shoreline. If the food is not available to enable them to refuel and continue to migrate then they will not be able to breed and their populations will decline and then there is the risk of extinction.
