That seems highly unlikely though, as White Storks don’t even like flying across the Mediterranean on their migrations back and forth between Africa and Eurasia. It seems likely that this individual bird was an escape from a local zoo, as has already been theorized on the New York State listserv.

The new cub was born at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens to a mother who wasn’t able to care for him. When zoo keepers saw that the baby was not eating and having trouble gaining weight, they made the decision to hand-raise him. It was on the SSP and Jacksonville Zoo’s advice that the new baby was brought to Busch Gardens.

The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? In my opinion, neither Harambe nor the child should ever have been at the zoo. Finally, what of the audience?

It was not a flycatcher at all, but an exotic (and equally bizarre) from Africa, which certainly escaped from someone’s cage or perhaps even migrated from the small breeding population of escapees in southern California. I know birders just as well as I know birds, and I was not ready to put all my faith in this fantastic sighting.

If they can spare a glance upward, the busy grape-pickers might also be treated to another portent of the changing seasons in the Iberian skies overhead: the sight of flocks of White Storks ( Ciconia ciconia ) heading south from their summer breeding grounds in Europe to Africa, where they spend the winter on the warm savannas.

Perhaps it would be better to move the tigers to that bigger reserve, or maybe a zoo. And therein my quarrel with those that oppose game hunting in Africa. The conservation value of hunting in Africa is a reality. As I said last week, more land is protected in Africa for game hunting than is protected in national parks.

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa – it was established in 1895. Of course, like many natural reserves in South Africa, Hluhluwe has the usual assortment of animals that have been ejected from European and US zoos and thus have to survive in the wild. Poor creatures.
