I did not actually go to Afghanistan for birding. In a barely disguised advertising plug, I will explain more at the end of this post (and probably in some other posts describing my travels in Afghanistan). These advertisements are for a good cause (see above), so I do not feel bad about them. Oh god, I sound like the Pope now.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Gaur Morning

Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

The other part of its attractiveness may be coming from the fact that it breeds in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan – countries seldom visited by foreign birders.

Hoopoe Lark

Its name pays homage to the bird that shares much of its distribution across North Africa, The Gulf, Pakistan and Afghanistan. With the downcurved bill and mottled chest, I should like to add thrasher to that list. Alaemon alaudipes boavistae is considered to be the westernmost extreme of the cline that runs extends as far as Asia.
