The islands were purchased by the United States from Denmark in 1916. For example, the Endangered Species Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act—America’s most important avian conservation laws—apply in both territories. Virgin Islands are 40 miles east of Puerto Rico and consist of St. Thomas, and a number of smaller islands.
