Photographer Mark Ross has captured some truly beautiful, and touching, photos of animals abandoned at kill shelters. From dogs to cats, kittens, and even birds and rabbits, there are all kinds of animals to be found at shelters. The photos in the book made me want to reach out and save each one of them.

It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need. Is it offensive to say that Australian Zebra Finches breed like rabbits? In this species (as in other jacanas), the females get by abandoning their partner after laying eggs and leaving incubation and chick-rearing to the males. I guess we have to be thankful they do not also wear leggings. I think this is a juvenile Grey Fantail.

When that isn’t possible, many raptor rehabbers keep tabs on nests and will place an abandon chick in a foster nest. A female red-tail may leave a nest to hunt for her two chicks and return to feed a rabbit to three chicks without noting an increase in the number of chicks a rehabber has placed there.

Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Over the years Jethro approached rabbits as if they should be his friends, but they usually fled. Jethro and the Bunny. Jethro the dog.
