Military Dogs Play Roles in Iraq and Afghanistan

Critter News

We chain them, use them for experiments, eat them in some countries and make them wear funny sweaters in others. The most famous example of military dogs is the Vietnam dogs who faithfully served American soldiers and then were abandoned to unknown fates after we left the country. If humans insist on wars and invasions, we should keep them to ourselves and leave other species out of it.

The Glitter in the Green: In Search of Hummingbirds–A Hummer Book Review

10,000 Birds

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. Hummingbird species, on the other hand, number in the hundreds.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of May 2015)

10,000 Birds

He yelled a relatively unintelligible explanation as he ran to the car, abandoning his family, and sped to Jamaica Bay where he parked and ran out to the breach of the West Pond where he relied upon the kindness of other birders, who let him use their scopes while he got his breath back. Coincidentally, this species was Corey’s Best Bird exactly one year ago. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment.

The Incredulous New Caledonian Crows

10,000 Birds

Even among our primate relatives, whoa are generally very smart, “Theory of Mind” is found in only a few species. But, when the crow only saw the menacing stick and could not infer that the agent causing the stick to menace the feeding box was gone, the crow still went after the feeding box, but kept inspecting the hole, seemingly worried that the stick would come out of it, and in some cases, was too jittery to complete the act and simply abandoned the feeding box altogether.

Spotlight: Maureen Eiger – To Intervene or Not to Intervene?

10,000 Birds

Experience shows that bird parents do feed babies in makeshift nests reattached to tree branches, bushes, gutters, and even tree cavity sections duct taped to another tree. A parent bird’s instinct to feed and protect their young is very strong, and they will not willingly abandon their babies. Bird diets are specific to each species; liquids and food fed improperly can cause a bird to aspirate, get sick or die.

The Emotional Lives of Animals

4 The Love Of Animals

Grief, friendship, gratitude, wonder, and other things we animals experience. Waterfall Dances: Do animals have spiritual experiences? Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. Stories about animals rescuing members of their own and other species, including humans, abound. They show how individuals of different species display compassion and empathy for those in need.

Eurasian Wryneck Jynx torquilla

10,000 Birds

There are two species in the Old World woodpecker genus that sounds like birds that birders would never be able to see. Neither even makes their own nesting cavities; they use the abandoned holes of other woodpeckers. BirdLife International considers them a Species of Least Concern because of its extremely large range and population, though it does seem to be in at least slight decline.

Fledgling Barred Warbler

10,000 Birds

The Barred Warbler , otherwise known as Sylvia nisoria , is one of those species that is aptly named if you only ever see an adult male. They are often raised by single mothers after their deadbeat dads disappear: Once the pair have mated, the female lays a clutch of three to six eggs and the male bird may abandon the female to take-up a new territory, in attempt to mate with additional females.

Aplomado Twitch in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

While we could chase a number of local, rare residents, looking for super tough species like Pheasant Cuckoo and Tawny-faced Quail is more akin to searching and lurking in appropriate habitat and just hoping to get lucky. They are the Desert Wheatears and Siberian Thrushes that abandon all reason and fly to Britain (maybe they heard about the UK Birdfair ?). In Costa Rica, we don’t get many chances to chase birds.

Pel’s Fishing Owls, Phantoms of the Okavango

10,000 Birds

We pour over photographs, read with envy the eye-witness accounts of the “lucky ones” and fabricate secret plans to abandon our loved ones and embark on expensive trips to track them down. Our trip to Botswana produced some great owl species besides the reclusive phantom, including some of the smallest and some of the largest owls in Africa. Our Pel’s experience deep within the heart of the Okavango was unforgettable. Birding’s Holy Grails.

Birding in a Hellmouth

10,000 Birds

The next day we tried mist netting the cave entrance, and the day after I abandoned the project entirely. I have, for the most part, been able to avoid caves since that experience. This species was a new species and genus for me, and a particularly attractive one that was a pleasure to watch as we wandered down the slippery walkway to the cave entrance. But I can say that I have seen, in one shape or another, these three species.

Come@Me: Don’t Mourn for Extinct Birds

10,000 Birds

Basically, this species is so dimwitted, it doesn’t know how to survive. Because, Pink Pigeons are not capable of doing the tasks required to create and bring up children of the species. O’Sullivan informs us that a fertile egg is finally produced (not clear if it’s from The Stud or the other male, the Bronx Zoo only has two males) and abandoned and successfully nurtured by a pair of Ring-necked Doves. Don’t these birds care about propagating their species?

Birding Eastern Zimbabwe

10,000 Birds

Due to the large number of specialty and range-restricted species it is a must-visit destination for any South African birder who wants to surpass the 800-mark of a Southern African life-list. Typical Zim scenery by Adam Riley (Rockjumper Birding Tours) Zimbabwe, or simply “Zim” as we like to call it, is a landlocked country that has recorded close on 700 bird species. I can speak from experience that this place should only be accessed by a 4 x 4 vehicle.

Searching for a White-backed Woodpecker

10,000 Birds

This means that there were nearly thirty of us making our way up the dirt track past long-abandoned quarries to get the area where the woodpeckers are normally found. We watched it working over another fallen log, a typical behavior of the species – they really like to forage very low. Many thanks to Swarovski Optik for inviting me along and letting me experience the natural wonders of the wonderful country of Hungary. ……… a.

Birdwatching Laguna de los Pozuelos – Trip Report

10,000 Birds

This was a great experience and took our minds away form the frustration of finding and entrance to the lake. It did not seemed like an abandoned place but there was no-one. We could not spot many other species but there were many more birds very far away. Continued from: Birding Humauca and Abra Pampa – Northern Argentina Trip Report.

Hawks In Flight, Second edition: A Review of a New Version of a Birding Classic

10,000 Birds

Second, it abandoned the standard format for field guides established by Roger Tory Peterson (who wrote the book’s Forward), succinct lists of field marks and arrows pointing them out, to engage in long paragraphs discussing how a hawk soaring above might be identified. The new edition adds 11 species, birds such as Zone-tailed Hawk, Short-tailed Hawk, and California Condor that are only seen in specific areas of North America. If it’s October, then it is time to look up.
